Mower conditioners: describe width, drive and fitted configuration

A mower conditioner's working width and its dimensions for movement answer different questions. Record both with their source and configuration, rather than using one convenient number for the whole machine.
Start with the manufacturer's model and serial identification. Note whether the offered equipment is a single unit or part of a wider combination. If a front or rear unit is being retained, make that boundary explicit before taking the main sale photographs.
Give each dimension a name
Use this specification sheet:
| Field | What to record | Preferred evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Exact unit or combination | Models and identifiers of every included unit | Plates and applicable documents |
| Documented working width | Manufacturer's figure for the identified configuration | Correct manual or specification |
| Transport dimensions | Width, height and length in the stated transport arrangement | Applicable records or competent measurement |
| Drive arrangement | What the documents specify and what is included | Instructions and labelled photographs |
| Conditioning equipment | Exact fitted type or configuration | Model-specific records |
| Guarding and covers | Visible condition and recorded findings | Dated photographs and specialist report if available |
If a figure is measured, say who measured it, when and in which configuration. If it is copied from manufacturer information, retain that reference. Avoid an unlabeled "width" that could mean the cutting span, folded envelope or a measurement across protruding parts.
Do not unfold or reposition unfamiliar equipment just to complete the sheet. Obtain a safe assessment or the applicable records.
Describe what is fitted now
A model range may include different arrangements. Confirm the actual conditioning equipment, drive and included controls before using a brochure description.
List later changes and available repair records. Where replacement components are mentioned, distinguish documented fitment from an assumption based on appearance. The rake and tedder discrepancy register offers a useful way to record uncertain substitutions without certifying them.
For powered implements, include the PTO shaft and guarding records. "Shaft included" is incomplete if its association with the machine is unknown.
Make the photographs answer the sheet
Plan photographs around the fields:
- Overall views showing the offered unit or combination.
- Legible identity plates.
- The stated transport configuration, where safely available.
- Included controls and loose accessories arranged with identifiers.
- Visible damage, missing covers or areas referred to in a report.
- Labels or markings needed to connect the machine with its documents.
Photographs should show the condition as it is. They do not establish the adequacy of guarding or the safety of a changed configuration.
HSE's agricultural guarding guidance explains the importance of suitable, maintained guards. Ask an appropriate competent provider to assess unresolved defects before the sale route is agreed.
Keep the release date consistent with use
If the mower is still required, date the specification and condition record. Agree a final update after its last planned use, including changed readings, new damage or replaced parts.
Use the seasonal machinery calendar to coordinate that update with viewing and collection. A machine cannot be both promised for release and retained for an unspecified remaining job.
Send the completed specification sheet to UK Auction Group's agriculture service. Include the source of the working-width figure and any measurement still needed for collection, so valuation and sale planning use the same configuration.
