Jacks and axle stands: clear markings before lotting

Do not turn a mixed group of jacks and axle stands into a single capacity claim. Identify the individual equipment and preserve the manufacturer's wording on each item.
Matching paint or approximate height does not establish a matched set. A missing label also cannot be repaired by borrowing a rating from another stand nearby. Keep those uncertainties visible while the sale is being planned.
Sort by evidence, not appearance
| What you find | Inventory treatment | Question before lotting |
|---|---|---|
| Clearly identified matched set | Record each component and the evidence connecting them | Is the set complete, with matching instructions? |
| Identified individual jack | Record its own model, markings and documents | What condition information and assessment are available? |
| Similar but unmatched stands | Keep separate inventory lines | Can the manufacturer or a competent person establish their identities? |
| Unreadable or missing capacity marking | Mark the rating as unresolved | Is reliable identification possible? |
| Reported defect or visible alteration | Record the fact and withhold any ready-for-use claim | What specialist decision is required? |
Use photographs to connect each row with the actual equipment. Include detail images of legible markings and reported defects where they can be obtained safely. Do not create a catalogue photograph that makes two unrelated items look like a verified pair.
The point of sorting is to produce an accurate question for an assessor and sale manager. It is not a home-made safety inspection. This guide gives no support method, load test or repair instruction.
Preserve the original wording
A rating may refer to a particular item, arrangement or set. Copy the manufacturer's statement in full enough to retain that meaning. Do not halve, double or otherwise reinterpret a marked figure for the catalogue.
For Great Britain, HSE's equipment-inspection guidance explains the role of appropriate inspection and competence. A seller's inventory notes do not replace that assessment. Northern Ireland requirements should be checked separately.
Keep related equipment in its own record. An engine crane has capacity conditions and examination history, while slings and chain blocks need item-level traceability. A workshop press needs a record of its frame, actuator and tooling; a nearby jack should not quietly become part of that press.
Decide whether the lot is ready
A group is ready for catalogue review when its contents and unresolved issues are explicit. That does not mean every item is cleared for supply. Agree how doubtful items will be assessed or excluded before using the small-lot worksheet to choose a commercial grouping.
Provide the inventory and photographs to UK Auction Group. Make the unresolved rows easy to spot so nobody converts an internal stock count into a safety assurance.
