Choose a used forklift against the work it must do. A headline capacity, a photograph and an attractive price do not establish that a particular truck will handle your loads at your lift heights, in your aisles.

Write the requirement before assessing the lot. Include actual load dimensions and weights, required lift positions, route restrictions, floor conditions and the operating environment. Give those details to a competent person who can assess the documented truck configuration.

Put the job beside the evidence

Use a comparison sheet for each candidate:

What the job needs Evidence from the truck Decision still required
Your loads at the required height Legible capacity information for the actual configuration Suitability for the loads and lift positions
Particular attachment Attachment identity and matching truck information Whether the combination is documented and suitable
Entry through doors and restricted areas Lowered mast and overall dimensions Route clearance with an appropriate allowance
Work within racking and aisles Truck dimensions and manufacturer application information Suitability for the actual layout
Suitable power arrangements Fuel or battery type; included charger details where relevant Charging, ventilation or other site provision
Reliable planned use Condition, maintenance and examination records Remaining defects and assessment before use

Do not fill an unknown field with a figure from a visually similar truck. Ask for the plate, manufacturer record or configuration-specific document.

Attachment and capacity information is especially important when the truck carries clamps, extensions or other equipment. A rating for a different arrangement does not answer the question. This comparison sheet is not a method for calculating a revised capacity.

Heights need names

"Maximum height" is too vague for many warehouse decisions. A truck can fit under a doorway with its mast lowered and still face an overhead restriction when raised. Lift height, raised mast height and free lift answer different questions.

Ask for labelled dimensions from the appropriate manufacturer's information and identify any missing value. The reach truck documentation guide explains the distinction and provides a dimension sheet. Use it even when the seller has supplied a brochure: the brochure still needs to match the truck and mast offered.

Bring the receiving site's measurements to the discussion. A truck specification alone cannot describe your doorway, beam positions or working route.

Read maintenance and examination records separately

HSE's forklift thorough examination guidance explains the different coverage of lifting parts under LOLER and other safety-related parts under PUWER in Great Britain. Routine servicing and thorough examination are different activities.

Check the truck identity, report date, scope, defects and evidence of action. An old report is useful history, but it does not settle what assessment the truck now needs or whether the present attachment arrangement matches the report.

Use the forklift examination records guide to organise those questions. Where documents are absent, record them as absent. Do not call the truck compliant simply because a sticker is visible.

Include the receiving workplace in the purchase

Budget for suitable collection, any required assessment, maintenance and preparation at your site. HSE's PUWER overview explains Great Britain employers' responsibilities for suitable equipment, maintenance, information and training. Buying the truck does not complete those workplace arrangements.

The seller-side forklift preparation guide can help you identify which photographs, accessories and records to request before committing.

For a forklift offered through UK Auction Group, send UK Auction Group your required configuration and the specific missing evidence. Ask about inspection access and collection arrangements. Keep the suitability decision with the people responsible for assessing the truck and your workplace.
