Metal-cutting bandsaws: describe the feed and capacity properly

A metal-cutting bandsaw listing should explain both what fits and which parts of the cutting sequence the machine carries out. "Automatic" and one capacity figure leave too much room for misunderstanding.
Record the exact model, documented cutting envelope and the installed feed arrangement. Then identify the vices, stops and stock supports included in the sale.
Capacity changes with shape and angle
Cosen's SH-460M specification presents round, square and rectangular capacities separately, with different entries at different mitre angles. It also distinguishes standard equipment from optional roller tables.
That is a useful example of why "250 mm capacity" can be an incomplete description. Use the matching documentation for the actual saw, including the angle and stock-shape conditions. Do not copy the largest dimension from a brochure heading and call it universal.
A rectangular capacity needs both dimensions in the correct order. Keep the manufacturer's convention visible. If a specification cannot be matched to the installed machine, mark it as unconfirmed.
What does the saw do automatically?
Ask about the steps individually. A powered cutting cycle or automatic head return does not necessarily mean that the machine advances stock for the next cut.
For example, the same Cosen page describes automatic head raising after a cut while identifying manual clamping. That combination needs a more precise description than "fully automatic".
Use this comparison sheet:
| Function | Information to record |
|---|---|
| Stock positioning | Manual, powered or programmed arrangement confirmed from records |
| Clamping | Installed vice arrangement and documented operation |
| Cutting feed | Manufacturer's description of the cutting cycle |
| Head return | Recorded function and whether it has been observed |
| Repeated lengths | Fitted stop, measuring or automatic-feed equipment |
| Mitre adjustment | Documented range and actual installed arrangement |
| Stock support | Included roller tables, stands or other identified equipment |
These fields describe the package. They are not operating instructions.
A buyer cutting occasional pieces may assess a different machine from a buyer seeking repeated batches. The description should allow that comparison without declaring one configuration better for every workshop.
Include the support equipment deliberately
Roller tables can make the proposed package substantially different in size and scope. Photograph them, record their identity where available and state which sections are included.
If they are shared with another saw, settle the allocation before cataloguing. A support shown in two photographs should not be promised in two lots.
Keeping suitable, identified supports with the saw can give a buyer a clearer arrangement to assess. Separate lots may suit surplus sections or a buyer who already has stock handling. Ask about the whole offer rather than assuming that more lots must mean a better result.
For other machines in the cutting area, see the cold saw inclusion record and ironworker station guide. Their capacities and accessories need separate descriptions.
Condition evidence should match the claim
Record blade specifications from the matching documents, and identify spare blades separately. State visible damage, known faults and available service records. A new blade does not establish the condition of guides, vices or feed equipment.
If an authorised demonstration is available, agree which functions it will cover. A short cut may demonstrate one operation without proving batch-feed repeatability or every mitre position. The demonstration guide helps keep the claim proportionate.
Coolant and swarf also affect the preparation and collection plan. Use the coolant and swarf handover guide to record the arrangements, without asking sale staff to drain or clean equipment informally.
Before seeking a sale assessment, compare the proposed description with the photographs and included support list. Note whether the saw remains in production and when it can be released.
UK Auction Group's engineering asset service can discuss the saw using that package. The fabrication and welding hub covers related workshop sales.
